The Audio Engineering Society (AES) bestowed seven members with esteemed Society honors at the opening ceremony of its 2024 AES European Convention in Madrid, the organization’s 156th AES Convention. In addition, the Convention’s Papers Chairs presented the event’s best papers awards, and the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society (JAES) Best Paper of 2023 award.
“AES awards are presented to the exceptional professionals who demonstrate our organization’s commitment to elevating the entire field of audio engineering,” said AES President Leslie Gaston-Bird. “I’d like to offer sincere congratulations to the recipients and thank them for their contributions to the advancement of audio engineering and to the Society.”
Society awardees in three categories were announced by Awards Committee Chair Joshua Reiss and presented by Gaston-Bird. The Board of Governors Award, given to members who have rendered exceptional service to the Society, was presented to:
- Brecht De Man in recognition of chairing the 2023 Audio Education Conference in Hasselt, Belgium;
- Ville Pulkki for his efforts in chairing the 154th Convention in Espoo, Finland;
- Hyunkook Lee in recognition of co-chairing the 2023 Spatial Audio Conference in Huddersfield, UK;
- Franz Zotter in recognition of co-chairing the 2023 Spatial Audio Conference in Huddersfield, UK; and
- Manuel Melon for his efforts in co-chairing the 2024 Acoustics and Sound Reinforcement Conference in Le Mans, France.
The Fellowship Award, given to AES Members who have provided prominent service to the Society, made a valuable contribution to the advancement or dissemination of knowledge of audio engineering, or made a valuable contribution to the application of audio engineering, was presented to Toru Kamekawa for diverse research on immersive audio production and reproduction and for years of outstanding contributions to AES activities.
The Silver Medal Award, which recognizes outstanding development or achievement in the field of audio engineering, was given to Angelo Farina for outstanding lifelong contributions to audio engineering, room acoustics, audio signal processing, and spatial audio.
In addition, the AES bestowed awards at the opening ceremony of the Convention to authors of AES Europe 2024’s best peer-reviewed Papers. AES Papers have driven the progress of audio technologies for over 70 years. At AES Europe 2024, Convention Papers Co-Chairs Eduardo Latorre Iglesias and Nils Peters presented the following awards:
- Best Technical Paper: "Determining the immersion sweet area in multichannel loudspeaker reproduction using spatial sound field features": Roman Klyan, Stephan Preihs and Jüergen Peissig
- Best Student Technical Paper: "Spatial Sampling versus Acquisition Time of Room Impulse Responses for Low-Frequency Sound Zones" - José Cadavid, Martin B. MØller, SØren Bech, Jan Ostergaardi, and Toon van Waterschoot
- Journal of the Audio Engineering Society Best Paper Award 2023: “Speech Intelligibility and Quality Evaluation of Automotive Microphones Using Different Test Metrics and Their Correlation” - Y. Du
